After failing to attract big consulting firms for its Panvel-Sion Expressway corridor, which will be an extension of Pune-Mumbai Expressway, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will now issue fresh tenders.
The 700-crore project targeted at ensuring Mumbai-Pune travel in just 2 hours got a setback when MSRDC got only one player responding as a consultant. "The company quoted Rs1.38 crore as consultation charges, while it had consented to do the same work for Rs48 lakh a few months ago. Since the quoted figure is not acceptable, we are diluting the conditions including the condition of experience of works done by the bidder. The bidder now should have an experience of handling works amounting to Rs350 crore. The earlier figure was Rs750 crore," PWD minister Anil Deshmukh told DNA.
The failure has apparently delayed the project which was to begin in March 2007 and be over in 18 months. "After the final report is submitted, the actual work can be started by December this year," Deshmukh said. He said the construction work would be carried out by five contractors simultaneously, so that the work is completed within the stipulated time.
The corridor will be the first Access Control Urban Road in India, with service roads for entry and exits at various points, dedicated lanes for heavy and light vehicles and subways-flyovers wherever required. "We can stick to the deadline as no acquisition or rehabilitation is required. The land is already in MSRDC's possession," said a MSRDC official. The official added that once completed, the Pune (Kiwale Naka)-Sion distance of 125 km can be covered in less than two hours.
