Sena-BJP members stage walk-out, Rane apologises

Members of the oppostition Shiv Sena and BJP staged a noisy walkout from the legislative assembly on Friday, after they protested the absence of cabinet minister Ajit Pawar and Minister of State for Water Supply Ranjit Kamble in the House.

Expressing displeasure over the issue, Deputy Speaker Pramod Shende even adjourned the proceedings briefly. Finally, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane tendered an apology on behalf of his absent colleagues.

Post-question hour, the House was taking up the listed four calling attention notices when a piquant situation arose. The second notice sought to be moved by Congress’s Chandrakant Chajjed related to rural water supply schemes, but the opposition wanted to know where the two ministers concerned were.

Shende informed the House that Pawar was on leave. To make matters worse, Shende added that the minister concerned for replying to the third notice, too, would not be there as he had sought nod to postpone the notice to Monday.

Though Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Harshavardhan Patil intervened to urge the chair to take up debate on the fourth notice, it failed to cut ice, as the Shende had adjourned the proceedings for five minutes.

While BJP’s Eknath Khadse charged the government with deliberately trying to gag the voice of the opposition, senior Peasants and Workers’ Party member Ganpatrao Deshmukh termed the ministers’ absence as an insult to the decorum of the House. The matter could be resolved only with Rane finally tendering an apology and assuring the House that such a thing will not happen ever again.
