MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken up a phase-wise repairs and upgrading of schools run by it.

"The aim is to change the look of dilapated school buildings and BMC has chalked out plans to provide a more conducive atmosphere to students," a BMC source said.

Tenders have been invited for the first phase of the project. Work is expected to begin in October, sources said.

New facilities, including green blackboards and drinking water troughs, as well as the development of play areas and revamping of toilet blocks are part of the project. A budget of Rs 30.18 crore has been allocated for it.

"Very soon students and parents will have a reason to smile and admire municipal schools," said Additional Municipal Commissioner Kishore Gajbhiye.

"MCGM had been taking up repairs of dilapidated municipal school buildings every year but the look and feel of the buildings has remained the same even after the repairs.

"We are introducing durable, maintenance-free, cost- effective, child-friendly and aesthetically pleasing elements within the school buildings."

Eighty-seven schools have been selected for phase one of the project.
