NEW DELHI: A group of AIIMS doctors on Wednesday went on a relay hunger strike here demanding 50 per cent quota for reserved category candidates in the appointment of senior resident doctors.

AIIMS had recently appointed 106 doctors as senior residents of which 24 were from the reserved category.

The 13 striking doctors, under the banner of Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum, demanded 50 per cent reservation in the appointment of senior residents.

"Fifty three of the 106 vacancies should be filled with reserved category candidates. Only 24 have received appointment letters so far," the doctors said in a statement.

They claimed several of their attempts to meet AIIMS Director P Venugopal fell on deaf ears.

The doctors claimed that though 74 reserved category candidates cleared the written examination for appointment as senior residents, only 24 were finally selected after departmental assessment.

The departmental assessment is subjective and the striking doctors alleged that it was being used by AIIMS Director Venugopal to appoint only those who support him.

The striking doctors also claimed that they were assaulted by AIIMS security guards yesterday when they sought an appointment with Venugopal.

AIIMS had recently conducted written tests for appointment of senior resident doctors. In reserved category, a total of 98 candidates appeared and 32 qualified of which 24 were selected depending on vacancies.

In unreserved category a total of 409 candidates appeared for the Senior Residents entrance exam of which 170 qualified. 67 were selected in the unreserved category depending on vacancies.
