With the race for admissions getting tougher, an increasing number of students are seeking other ways of securing seats at prestigious colleges. The demand for the so-called ‘management seats’ are on a rise in all streams as cut-off percentages rise.

Unlike earlier, when colleges got requests, mainly for engineering and medical streams, authorities these days are hounded by requests from politicians, corporators, government officials and even parents for streams such as Information Technology, Computer Science, Mass Media, Management Studies and many more. This is because of an increasing demand for these streams which have limited seats.

Sources from various colleges said that management quota seats are selling like hot cakes this year. “We get requests from our sister concerns to government officials, politicians, corporators, employees of the college and parents,” said one college trustee.
Principals said that 15 per cent of the seats under management quota are reserved for degree courses and five per cent are for junior colleges as per University guidelines.
With admissions becoming tough, most parents prefer shelling out extra cash to get a reserved seat. “However, if you are late by even a day you might end up not getting admission to the college through the quota,” said Rina Nair who paid Rs65,000 for a seat in BSC-IT in one of Mumbai’s esteemed colleges.

The cost of a seat for a BCom is around Rs50,000, for BSC- IT it’s Rs50,000-Rs70,0000, while a seat in BMS is around Rs70,000. However, the cost of management quota seats for engineering and medical courses is much more expensive. Such seats cost between Rs2 lakh and Rs10 lakhs.

Parents say that they have no other option but to pay to get their child a seat in a good college.
