MUMBAI: Police in Maharashtra's Nanded district have registered an FIR against some villagers for assaulting 10 state government officials who had come to survey the site for a proposed irrigation project.

The incident occurred on Thursday at Khambala village in Kinwat tehsil of Nanded district, which borders Andhra Pradesh, SDO Sanjay Gaikwad said on Friday.

As soon as the officials, including an executive engineer from Yavatmal, arrived in the village, they were attacked by some villagers who were protesting against the acquisition of their land for the Lower Penganga project.

The villagers tore off the engineer's clothes and assaulted him. He was admitted to a hospital in Yavatmal, Gaikwad said.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.
