A grocer in Vikhroli was arrested on Sunday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Puroshottam Bhanushali, 31, owner of Shiv Shakti Grain stores, reportedly used paper bags containing verses from the Quran to fill groceries.

A grocer in Vikhroli was arrested on Sunday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Puroshottam Bhanushali, 31, owner of Shiv Shakti Grain stores, reportedly used paper bags containing verses from the Quran to fill groceries.
The alleged violation came to light when Jalal Inamdar, general secretary, Muslim Jamat Masjid, noticed religious verses on the bag when he purchased grains from the shop. Inamdar then approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Inamdar told the police that the verses were printed in Urdu on the paper bag. He also told the owner to refrain from using the bag.
“As soon as we registered a complaint, we took Bhanushali into custodyand recovered 40 similar bags from the shop,” said Nagesh Lohar, senior police inspector, Vikhroli police station.
However, the police said Bhanushali was unaware of the contents. “Bhanusali apparently did not know that the bags he used to wrap food grains had verses from the Holy Text,” said Ravindra Mhatre, police inspector. The police said they were trying to locate the place where the bags were manufactured and circulated in the market.
“The printing press may have discarded the printed paper due to bad quality and may have sold in the scrap. It is this scrap paper that may have been recycled to make the bag,” a senior police officer told DNA
Bhanushali has been booked under the IPC 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class). He was produced before the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Vikhroli and has been remanded in police custody for a day till Monday.
