Eligible voters now need not grumble, complain about not knowing where their polling booth is during the election time. Voters in Mumbai  will just have to SMS their details such as surname, name, father’s name and address to 6677 to find out their nearest polling station, while voters in rest of the state can SMS details on 7333 to get the location of their nearest polling station.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission plans to hold the next 2009 Assembly elections in the state using the new photo-electoral rolls. The move seeks to completely stamp out attempts at bogus voting, as attempts to cast bogus vote in another person’s name will not be possible with photo-electoral rolls in place. Such draft electoral rolls are already ready in 52 Assembly constituencies of the state.

But for those voters who have become eligible to vote as on January 1, 2007 in state who still not have enrolled their names in the voters’ list, they now can avail of the summary revision of electoral rolls being undertaken by the Election Commission on July 14 and July 15 to get their names enrolled. The EC hopes to complete the entire process by mid-2008.

Disclosing this to newspersons on Monday, states Chief Electoral Officer, UPS Madan admitted that the response to EC’s move to prepare photo-electoral rolls especially in Mumbai has been dismal.

Out of the 52 constituencies in the state, electors in  just five assembly constituencies—Mumbadevi, Khetwadi, Opera House, Nagpada and Mazgaon have enrolled their names in the new photo-voter list. Eighty per cent of the work of preparing such lists in the rest of the state is nearing completion.

At present out of the present total 6,66,63,292 crore draft electoral voters, 62,52,580 new Voter ID cards have been made in 94 assembly constituencies in the state. While miniature images of 1,65,27,887 voters for the Voters’ list rolls have been scanned.

There are 64,495 polling stations in the state. All those eligible voters who wish to have their names enrolled, correct wrong entries, modifications, Madan said that such voters can avail of on-line registration at www.ceo.maharashtra.gov.in in all municipal corporation areas.
