Colleges say lack of infrastructure makes increase impossible

Despite being offered additional divisions, colleges turned down the State School Education Department’s proposal to increase the intake capacity for admissions to FYJC. Colleges claim that lack of infrastructure and man-power will make it impossible to increase the number of seats.

“Last year, we had increased the intake capacity by seeking a sanction for 120 excess seats. As these additional divisions are unaided, students will have to pay more as admission fees. We already have four divisions for the science stream and three each for arts and commerce. Any addition in the number of seats will add to the burden on the teaching and non-teaching staff,” said UC Mashelkar, principal of Patkar College.

TA Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College said, “Colleges based in south-Mumbai face problems due to lack of space. Increasing the number of divisions will be an impossible task for them.”

Supporting the University of Mumbai’s plans to introduce shift-college concept for degree courses, Shiware added, “There is an urgent need to implement the concept for the junior college.” This year’s high cut-offs and the increase in the pass percentage has disappointed many students as they are unable to secure a seat in the college of their choice. Colleges observe that they have been receiving a number of applications even for unaided divisions.

“We have so far received over 15,000 applications from students to unaided divisions. Students are willing to pay up an extra fee of Rs8,000 per annum for admissions to these divisions, as against the aided divisions where they pay a meagre amount of Rs120 to Rs200 per annum,” added principal Mashelkar.

Joycee Shankeran, the Department’s in-charge secretary, said “With the end of the announcement of the merit lists, information will be sought from colleges over the number of students failing to acquire a seat in any of the city college.”

“Depending on the number of students deprived of admission to FYJC, colleges will be asked to increase the intake capacity,” said Shankeran.
