A 62-year-old woman was tied up and robbed by the watchman of her society in Ulhasnagar on Saturday morning. The suspect is missing.

Mayadevi Ahuja, a widow, who stays alone in her apartment Narayan Bhavan in camp number one of Ulhasnagar, was watching television at 2:30 am when she was reportedly  attacked with choppers by the watchman. She fell unconscious on the spot.

The watchman, a Nepali national, (the police have not given his name yet), assaulted her on her face to get the cupboard keys. He tied her with a rope and fled with gold ornaments and Rs 20,000.

Ahuja, who runs a shop in Ulhasnagar camp number-2, has been staying alone in her bungalow ever since her son died in an accident eight years ago. Ahuja’s husband died 10 years ago.

On Saturday, when Rakesh Kalwani, an employee with Shivam Attractions, went to her residence to collect keys to open the shop, but there was no reply despite several knocks on the door.

Kalwani went back and returned after an hour, but again there was no reply. Worried, he alerted Ahuja’s relatives who stay in the same locality. They rushed to the spot and the police was informed. Police officers reached the place and broke open the door and saw Ahuja being tied up to a sofa-cum-bed.

“We can’t tell now how much money has been stolen as Ahuja is still in a state of shock. But she told us that he took away her chain and also gold ornaments from the cupboard,” said Rakesh Kalwani. However, the police found gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh in her house.

“A Nepali national, the watchman has been working in the locality for the last one month.  On Friday, he visited Ahuja’s residence three times for some petty reasons. We are searching for him,” said police inspector Vijay Bagal.
