Maharashtra’s education ministry has received over 350 proposals from across the state seeking permission to start departments of fashion technology. In a clear departure from the past, colleges are opting for non-conventional courses for the coming academic year.

A senior officer in the Ministry of Education said, “What is surprising is that the demands to run fashion technology and dress designing courses are coming from places like Wardha, Yeotmal, Aurangabad, Nanded and Nashik.”

Minister for Higher and Technical Education Dilip Walse-Patil, has directed the department to ensure that colleges opting for new academic courses have proper infrastructure and teaching faculty to cope with non-conventional subjects. This year, the state has given permission for only 50 new colleges to run traditional degree courses.  The government is keen to promote non-traditional courses that can provide job opportunities to young graduates, but is worried that private colleges might commercially exploit students.

CEO of LS Raheja Technology Institute, Sadguru Kamat said, “There is greater awareness and demand for fashion technology. We had to struggle to find suitable candidates two years ago. Now, not a single seat remains vacant in fashion technology courses.”

Media-awareness coupled with newer avenues provided by sprawling malls showcasing exclusive designer wear have provided more outlets to students who graduate in fashion technology. Well-known fashion designers and corporate houses have started employing fashion technology graduates in their offices. Even the electronic media is employing them in large numbers.

Fashion designer Shaina NC said, “Fashion technology and dress designing is no longer an elite phenomenon. A lot of young talent from middle-class families from rural Maharashtra is opting for fashion designing as a professional career. Institutes like the Indian Fashion Academy have started teaching fashion designing in Marathi.”
