LUCKNOW: Owning moral responsibility for the discrepancies in the CPMT test results, Veer Bahadur Singh Poorvanchal University Vice-Chancellor Prof K P Singh on Thursday resigned from his post.

Singh announced his resignation soon after declaring the revised CPMT results at a press conference here.

He said he would meet the Governor T V Rajeswar, the ex-officio Chancellor of the University, shortly and submit his resignation.

Poorvanchal University had conducted this year's CPMT examinations.

The results of the CPMT had sparked off large-scale violence after a large number of candidates alleged irregularities. One candidate had even committed suicide after the results were declared.

Chief Minister Mayawati had later stayed the results and set up a nine-member committee to probe the irregularities.

The committee had visited Jaunpur on Sunday last and thoroughly scanned the answer sheets but did not find any irregularity.

The government had on Wednesday given a clean chit to the VC saying that there was no "intentional error" but said there was a "big mistake committed in programming".
