GHAZIABAD: An alert has been sounded in Western Uttar Pradesh after receipt of a letter which claimed that Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist outfit could carry out explosions at railway stations in the state and some other vital installations.

The letter, in the name of LeT, claimed that the outfit could also target the India Gate in Delhi, Golden temple in Amritsar and the Vaishnodevi shrine, police sources said.

The letter, received by the superintendent of Bulandshehar Railway Station yesterday, demanded the release of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death, before June 30, the sources said.

Inspector General of Police (Meerut Zone), V K Gupta, however, did not rule out the threat being a hoax, but said round the clock high vigil will be maintained.

Ghaziabad SSP Deepak Rajan said that security is being beefed up in the district particularly in and around the railway station.

The letter claimed that the terrorist outfit could blow up railway stations in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Lucknow, Delhi and Shimla if the demand was not met.

Bulandshehar SSP Sujeet Rande said that the State Government has been informed about the letter.
