AHMEDABAD: Speaking at a press conference on the eve of the new semester, Director, NID, Darlie O Koshy said: “The proposal for university status to NID under section 3 of the UGC act was forwarded to the Central government’s department of industrial policy and promotion on February 28. After getting university status, NID would provide degree courses to students and also offer PHD degrees.”

NID plans to start a faculty development centre this year to provide structured training to newly recruited faculty members. “We want to motivate our faculty members to enhance their talent and knowledge and develop new competencies,” added Head of the faculty department, JG Sevak.

Requests from other organisations, including design schools and colleges in India, for training of their faculty members and teachers will also be considered.

Two new post-graduate courses called design for retail experience and design for digital experience will start from June 21 at NID’s research and development centre in Bangalore, for a class of 25 students. The programmes will have an integrated approach in designing products and will focus on human experience in the context of designing.

The campus is equipped with a colour research lab, for which Asian paints has promised to provide financial support of Rs 28 lakh every year.

Another significant step taken by NID is to initiate a competitive entrance exam called ‘National Design Aptitude Test’ for admissions. “Experts have been selected for assessing the papers, validating and facilitating the test.

“Institutes like IILM School of design and DJ Academy of Design have told us that they would like to use the scores of this test for their admission process,” said Koshy.

This year, NID has 15 students from Gujarat compared to last year’s 11. Maharashtra with 49 students tops the list.
