With a rise in demand for job-oriented courses, this year Commerce colleges are wooing students by shifting their focus from conventional courses to professional ones.

In fact south Mumbai colleges like Hinduja College of Commerce and HR College of Commerce and Economics have already applied to the University of Mumbai so that they can introduce the BCom in Financial Market.

Meanwhile Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies has introduced a three-year degree in Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course from this academic year.

“Nowadays, students are more inclined towards pursuing a course designed by the professionals from the industry. For instance, although our BBA course has a limited intake of 60, nearly 2,400 students appeared for the entrance exam,” said Madhav Welling, in charge of the BBA programme at NMIMS.

Regarding plans to introduce a BCom in Financial Markets, colleges feel that the three-year course, which is being taught at the London School of Economics at the under-graduate level, will present exciting career opportunities for
Indian students going abroad.

“Students can get a broader perspective of the financial system. If the course receives affiliation, it will be introduced from the current academic year. It will  have an intake capacity of 60,” said TA Shiware, Principal of Hinduja College.

“Following the demand for specialised courses like BCom in Banking and Insurance and in Accounts and Management, we are confident that Financial Markets will also attract students,” he added.

“We want to introduce the Financial Market degree as it put our students on par with IIM graduates,” said VN Sharma, director of administration at HR College.

Students feel opting for an undergraduate degree is a smart idea. Shashank Ranjan, who wants to study Accounts and Finance Management at HR College, said, “Students no longer have to waste long years for seeking specialisation in a particular subject.”
