Package for the next coach unlikely  to be as lucrative as that of Chappell’s

MUMBAI: Whether it is Graham Ford or John Emburey, neither will touch Greg Chappell’s level. It will take some time for the eventual coach of the Indian team to reach the pay scale of his predecessor. According to Board sources, the package prepared for the next coach will not be as lucrative as that of Chappell’s who was, as a board official said, offered the best possible deal. But the next coach will have to make do with a lesser package.

“We’ve to see the results of the first year. The new coach has to show the results,” said Niranjan Shah, without divulging the exact features of the contract to be offered to the new India coach. There is also a thinking in the Board that neither candidate in the fray has the profile of Chappell, who was an accomplished batsman.

Chappell was getting $ 240,000 per year with many extra benefits — including free accommodation in a five star villa in Bangalore. There was a suggestion from one section of the Board that there should be a performance-based pay structure for the coach — like the one being planned for the players — but the Board secretary denied that such a move is being contemplated.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Ford has a good chance to get the post. Although the top functionaries of the BCCI are wary of coming on record — after the experience of the last meeting where the application of hot favourite Dav Whatmore was thrown into dustbin — one official has told DNA that the South African will most likely be chosen.

The appointment, which will initially be for one year, could well be made on Saturday night itself in Chennai, where the seven-member special committee on the issue will meet. The two contenders will reach the city from London on Saturday morning.

Apart from the presentation, the contenders will have to do a lot of answering about their vision for Indian cricket. The committee is headed by BCCI president Sharad Pawar and includes former captains S Venkataraghavan, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri.

The meeting has been fixed for 8.30 pm since Pawar and other BCCI officials were to attend the Asian Cricket Council General Body meeting earlier in the day. Gavaskar, who is holidaying in Goa, is also expected to reach Chennai late.
