It came as a relief for the Management students as the Common Entrance Test (CET) was scrapped by the board from this year. On the other hand, the engineering students would like to opt for CET exams to showcase their talent.

DNA spoke to some of the engineering professionals and asked them whether the CET for engineering should be scrapped as well.

Esha Tipnis, a student who wants to opt for engineering said, “I feel CET is a must thing for students to get into a desired field as we come from different boards ICSE, CBSE and Maharashtra board. So our study pattern and the talent level vary from one student to another. At CET student’s talent is tested on the merit and they get admissions based on these scores but I oppose the reservation system.”

According to the figures given by the Directorate of Technical Education (Maharashtra), there are in all 163 colleges and 51,282 seats for engineering, 58 colleges and 3,775 seats for medical and 107 colleges and 6,225 seats for pharmacy in the state.  The number of students appearing for this test is 1, 76,247 which is more than the available seats.

Another student studying for civil engineering also feels that CET is needed. He said, “CET will explore the knowledge and capability of students for a particular career. It is a common platform to showcase one’s talent and students should take it in positively.”

Varun Wadhera, an engineering professional said, “I feel CET is useless because one can opt for the career without entrance exams also. They can get admissions easily through paid seats which is a common trend these days.”
