The house of a retired Bombay High Court judge was burgled early on Wednesday morning. It is believed that the robbery occurred between 6.15am and 9.15am — when essentials vendors deliver their goods to residents at the posh Nariman Point building.

Cash and jewellery collectively worth Rs80,000 were stolen from former judge Prakash Shah’s flat in Samta Apartments. Apparently, the incident took place when the judge had gone for his morning walk, his wife Usha was in the kitchen and his daughter Prerna Gandhi was in the wash room.  News of the robbery surprised residents, as the building is in a high security zone due to its proximity to Mantralaya — it’s right opposite the state government’s administrative headquarters — on Major Jagannathrao Bhosale Marg.

The police believe that the robbery may have occurred as the front door wasn’t closed by the judge when he went for his morning walk. “It looks like an inside job,” said an official, who added that they hadn’t made any arrests yet.

Apair of earrings, three diamond rings, a mobile phone and wallet which contained Rs5,000 cash, six credit cards and important documents like driving licence, and PAN card.
