Dutch express company TNT’s Indian subsidiary, TNT India, plans to launch privately owned freighters on the India-Europe route in the next few months.
BANGALORE: Dutch express company TNT’s Indian subsidiary, TNT India, plans to launch privately owned freighters on the India-Europe route in the next few months. This follows the near integration of Speedage Cargo Express, the semi-road express firm it acquired last September, with its own processes and service standards.
At present, the company, which plans to become the leading express cargo firm in India by 2010, uses belly space on commercial airlines for its international and domestic shipments.
“In the last eight months, we have invested ample time and money in the transformation of Speedage, which has started getting the feel and look of TNT. We will now look at introducing TNT freighters on India-Europe route for better control,” said Abhik Mitra, managing director, TNT India.
After Europe, TNT would look at India-China connectivity through own aircraft and then turn attention to domestic air express. “By 2008, we will seriously look to launch our aviation operation for our domestic air express business,” said Mitra.
The company would consider both organic and inorganic route for the domestic aviation operation.“Today, there are no air express company with own aircraft worth acquiring. There was Blue Dart, but that has been acquired,” said Mitra.
TNT is also close to completing the process of re-branding Speedage. The transition of Speedage processes and service standards to TNT’s has helped improve the firm’s average yield for road express service by 10-12%. But yields remain below market average.
In 2006, the firm committed over Rs 550 crore as investments to become the country’s leading express company by 2010.
