Police believe this could have resulted in a rift between the Navyman and TCS employee Kausambi

The MIDC police investigating the sensational murder of the 24-year-old software professional in a hotel in Andheri have discovered the possible factor behind the murder.

According to Deputy Commissioner of police JJ Naiknaware, investigations revealed that the suspect Manish Thakur was a married man with a child and he did not tell Kausambi about this. “Three months ago, Kausambi through her mother discovered that Manish was married even before their relationship started. It is possible that their relationship worsened after this,” Naiknaware said.

Manish’s wife and child are staying in Kolkata. Naiknaware said some months ago Thakur had phoned Kausambi’s brother Shaunak and mother Ranjana at their residence in Dumka (Jharkhand). “He sought Ranjana’s permission to marry Kausambi,” Naiknawre said. But, Ranjana somehow discovered that Manish had already been married and had a child as well. Kausambi was informed about this.

“When Kausambi and her family questioned Manish about this, he confessed to the fact but told that he would divorce his wife very soon and then get married to Kausambi,” Naiknaware said. But Kausambi and her family did not approve of this and refused Manish’s proposal. The police feel that this could have created a rift between Kausambi and Manish.

“Unless we interrogate Manish and find out the real reason, it will be very difficult to say that this is the actual reason or motive behind the killing,” Naiknaware said.

Thakur, who is a sailor in the Indian Navy, was based at Kochi in Kerala. However, since February this year he has been posted in Goa. “As soon as we learnt that Thakur was employed with Navy, we alerted the Western Naval Command in Mumbai,” said additional commissioner of police (West region) Bipin Bihari. He said Thakur was detained by the Navy in Goa. The police are looking at the possibility that the killing could have been pre-meditated. “Apart from the bullets, we have seized a chopper from the room. It shows Manish could have planned to kill Kausambi either with the chopper or the gun,” Bihari said.

Kausambi’s brother Shaunak told the police that on Sunday night she had phoned him to say Manish wanted to marry her. She had sounded scared. Next morning when he tried to phone her, Kausambi’s phone was not reachable.
