Nazneen, dressed as a nurse, steals baby as a friend tells her security at govt hospitals is lax

Even a seasoned film writer couldn’t have scripted and captured the intrigue, passion and yearning of this abduction story which has ended on a familiar note — arrest of a wannabe mother whose desire for motherhood took her on a long-winding string of criminal manoeuvres.

Meghwadi police on Sunday late night finally arrested 24-year-old Nazneen Sheikh whose quest for a child drove her to steal one from a maternity home in Jogeshwari (East) on May 7.

“The stolen baby was recovered from Nazneen’s Hawaldar Chawl, Mograpada residence in Andheri (E) following a tip off,” senior police inspector Jaspalsingh Ragi of Meghwadi police station told DNA.

Initially Nazneen claimed that the baby was her’s but was unable to produce any evidence in support. However, what she told the police left them surprised at her audacity in her bid to have a child at any cost.

Ragi said Nanzneen had been married to Nasir (28) — working in Dubai — six years ago.

Unable to conceive, she was subject to constant taunts by her in laws. A desperate Nazneen then sought counsel from one of her friends Nafisa who told her she was about to conceive, and, once she delivered, the child would be her’s.

When Nafisa got pregnant in due course, she told Nazneen to pretend that she was in the family way. Nazneen got into the act by faking morning sickness and nausea. With a   heavy cloth tied across her waist, she was also able to show a pregnant bulge. The drama took an unpredictable twist when Nafisa chose to ditch Nazneen at the last minute by refusing to part with her baby. In a case of desperate situation brooking desperate measure, Nazneen this time took the advise of another friend, Asifa who told her to abduct a baby from any of the government hospitals since security is usually lax there.

On May 7 Nazneen went to Squatters Colony Maternity Home at Jogeshwari (East) with Asifa, but was turned away by the watchman on duty, since she had not come during the visiting hours. Nazneen then went to the hospital in a nurse’s uniform under a burkha and abducted the child from there. She then walked out of the hospital, by hiding the baby under her burkha.

Buckling under pressure, she admitted to having stolen the baby whose rightful parents are Santosh Yadav (28) and Rita (24). The baby is presently in the custody of a nurse at KEM Hospital and would continue to be with her till the court gives its orders. Nazneen has been booked under section 363 (kidnapping), 170 (impersonation) and 419 (cheating with impersonation) of the IPC and remanded to police custody till May 18.

Santosh, the father of the abducted child was overjoyed. “I never thought I would see the child again. When I saw the child hale and hearty, my joy knew no bounds. It was the best gift that the police could have given my wife on a Mother’s Day.”

“We are investigating what roles Nafisa and Asifa played in this sordid episode and whether they were involved in similar crimes,” said police inspector Jaydeep Surve.
