VADODARA: Art student Chandra Mohan of Maharaj Sayajirrao University University here, arrested in connection with an 'obscene' art exhibition in the face of Sangh Parivar protests, was on Monday freed on bail even as his supporters and critics staged separate demonstrations outside the campus.

Chandra Mohan, a student of the University's Fine Arts Faculty, was released from custody after furnishing a bond of Rs 5,000 after spending five days in jail.

Around 200 people, including human rights activist Shabnam Hashmi and filmmaker Madhushri Dutta and activists from Mumbai, joined the protest outside the Maharaja Sayajiroa University.

Joined by eminent people from the Fine Arts field in Vadodara, supporters of Chandramohan held placards that decried the role and interference of right wing activists in the matter.

Several members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held separate demonstration outside the University supporting the student's arrest.

Later, activists from both the sides were removed from the road by the police as they were blocking the traffic.

Ten persons were detained by police when supporters of the student and those opposed to him held demonstrations and blocked vehicular traffic here.

Earlier in the day, MSU decided not to allow outsiders in the campus as artists across the country were expected to join students and faculty for a public meeting to protest the action against suspended Faculty Dean S Pannikar and Chandra Mohan.

There was a huge police presence at the university to ensure no outsiders enter the campus.

The university suspended its Fine Arts faculty dean after he refused to close Chandra Mohan's exhibition which had drawn ire of the Sangh Parivar following alleged negative portrayal of Hindu deities.
