Australia-based businessman Lachlan Murdoch — once heir to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire — says Indian talent has huge potential.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son Lachlan had come a long way indeed — from cleaning printing presses to became the chairman of News Corp when he was all of 33, only to quit his father’s business in 2005 in blaze of controversy.

Lachlan set out to Australia to start afresh with his wife model wife Sarah, and established his own firm, Illyria. Now, after taking his independent business to different parts of the world, he has now collaborated in a major way with Percept in a venture to identify, hone and polish Indian talent.

“The media industry here and around the world is driven by its creative talent. There is so much of raw talent you see in India in various domains, but they probably lose out due to their inability to handle the pressures that come with the job of being a celebrity or a star,” the dapper looking businessman told After Hours.

“We will identify, acquire raw talent, and give them the much-needed professional edge required to catapult their career into the big league. I see huge potential for this business going forward,” he added.

A close friend of Hollywood stars like Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and director Baz Luhrmann, Lachlan is also aware of India’s Bollywood biggies. “I have heard a lot about Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan,” he says and goes on to add that stars like them - and many others from Bollywood - have the potential to be at par with their Hollywood counterparts.

“I think Bollywood draws huge crowds abroad, especially Indian expats. Bollywood films are also being nominated at various international film festivals and awards today, which goes to prove that there is a huge fan following and audience abroad,” he says.

But at the moment, Lachlan is taking things one at a time. “No, I haven’t thought about producing Bollywood films as yet,” he says. But make no mistake, ‘as yet’ are the operative words.
