LUCKNOW: In a swift operation laced with Bolllywood style suspense and drama, the Special Task Force (STF) of the UP police on Tuesday rescued a teenager kidnapped from Lucknow a week ago. Two of the abductors were shot dead in the encounter while two managed to escape.

The sensational operation masterminded by STF Additional DG Shailja Kant Misra had the policemen acting as a television crew looking for a haunted house for a shooting location. The four abductors were holed up with the 14-year-old Mohit Chandnani in a deserted building known as the “bhutaha bangla” (haunted bungalow) in Ganeshpur village of Ramnagar in Barabanki district, about 70 km from Lucknow.

The encounter started as soon as the policemen entered the bungalow. After an exchange of fire which lasted about 15 minutes, Mohit was rescued. Two of the abductors, Rinku and Rajesh, both aged around 22, were killed on the spot while two of their accomplices managed to escape.

“The case was worked out by electronic surveillance,” UP DGP KL Sharma later told reporters. He said that the police had tapped the mobiles being used by the kidnappers to call Mohit’s family members. The abductors made a call to demand a ransom of Rs 50 lakh on Sunday.

“Though Mohit’s parents did not tell us, we picked up this call which also gave us a clue about the hideout,” ADG SK Misra told DNA. The STF which had put the abductors’ mobiles on surveillance monitor their movement and planned to storm the hideout in the morning. The operation was mounted at 8.15 am on Tuesday and Mohit was freed soon after.

Mohit, who had been kidnapped from near his house in Aliganj in Lucknow on May 1, had also sustained an injury from a shot fired by the abductors. “We are thankful to the UP police for recovering my child,” said a relieved Purushottam Chandnani, Mohit’s father, a middle-class shop-owner. “The media also helped in getting Mohit freed,” said his mother Kanchan.
