LONDON: Indians working in UK are facing expulsion, thanks to the government’s changed immigration rules that have received support from Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London.

“London’s economy stands to gain massively from the high-skilled staff it attracts. But migrants can make their full contribution only if policy enables them to develop projects, build careers and shape their personal life on a stable and secure basis,” said Livingstone.

The mayor urged the government to allow people admitted to the UK under the highly skilled migrants programme before November 7, when the new rules were put in place to apply for permanent settlement.

India is the third largest investor in UK. India accounted for 16 per cent of all new foreign investment into London alone between 2003 and 2007. “Vast majority of Indian HSMP holders who came to UK brought major sum of investments from India hence boosting UK’s economy. But their fate in Britain is hanging in the balance,” said Amit Kapadia, director and co-ordinator of the HSMP Forum.

“HSMP holders are now left with no finances and are forced to return to India empty handed after refusal of their visa extension as per the new rules”, he added.

Rajesh Sharma, an HSMP holder and entrepreneur, who was in the construction business with the government of Gujarat and had crores of rupees turnover, is a prime example of how HSMPs have suffered.

“Because of the false promises made by the UK government I have wound up my construction business in India and sold my assets and property at a much cheaper rate and brought all of my wealth here. After making a huge investment in the UK I am not qualifying for a visa extension according to new rules implemented retrospectively. My family and I now have to leave UK bankrupt as the government has changed its mind. This is a present day colonial rule.”
