GURGAON: Parents of an infant, who was believed to have been abandoned at a city hospital, returned on Wednesday to be with the child claiming they had gone to their village in Bihar to get money for the treatment.

The 22-year-old boy is suspected to be suffering from a heart ailment and his parents were reportedly asked to fork out Rs one lakh by Life Line Health Care.

Both the infant's parents and the hospital authorities denied that the boy was abandoned.

The infant's mother Ruby said, "We were first asked Rs one lakh but when my husband said he cannot afford it we were asked for Rs 50,000. My husband said he can afford only Rs 5,000 so we didn't have a choice, but to leave him there."

The parents of the child, who was being treated for the last 20 days, had not abandoned him and had gone to their village to borrow money, claimed Anish Dhar, CEO of Life Line Health Care, and termed media reports of the child being abandoned as wrong.

"The father had telephoned me to say that he would reach the hospital by today," he said.

The boy was born to Rajesh Kumar Ranjan and his wife Ruby on April 9 at a private hospital. The child developed complications just a day after birth and was admitted at Life Line Health Care

Ranjan works as a peon in a factory drawing a salary of Rs 2,50O per month and his employer said he had not reported for work since April 10.

Dhar said Ranjan had paid some money to the hospital for the treatment of the child. Suspicion started when the parents did not turn up at the hospital for the last seven days, he said, adding that doubts got cleared after the child's father called him.

Meanwhile, Apollo hospital and Fortis said that they would offer full treatment to the child if the family came forward.

"We will offer full treatment to the child once we hear from the family members as they haven't approached us yet," said a a Apollo spokesman.

Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Gupta, when asked to comment on the incident, said district administration has no role to look after the child as the baby is being treated by a private hospital and another hospital at Delhi had agreed to treat the child free of cost.

"If the parents would not return to take the child, the administration would intervene," he added.
