MUMBAI: A Police Inspector, convicted in a bribery case last week, was again sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) today for accepting Rs 5,000 as bribe from a person in order not to arrest his relative in connection with a 2001 robbery case.

Pronouncing the judgement, Additional Sessions Judge D B Poojari held Jagannath Jadhav guilty under sections 7, 13(1)(d) r/w 13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act and u/s 343 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced him to 7 years RI. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000, in default; he will have to undergo further RI to six months.

Judge Poojari, in his brief order, said no clemency should be shown to the accused in this case as he was convicted in another case but as far as fine is concerned; it could be imposed lesser under section 427 of CrPC.

Additional Public Prosecutor Dilip Shah said on the morning of February 6, 2001, the accused had entered into the house of complainant Firoz Khan at Govandi, an eastern suburb, and asked him about his brother-in-law Munna Dilwar Khan and another person Mohammed Nabi Ahmed in connection with an offence registered u/s 379 r/w 34 of IPC at Vashi Railway Police station against them.

Jadhav took the complainant to Vashi Police Station, where he demanded Rs 25,000 from Firoze for releasing Munna Khan. After negotiations, Firoz agreed to pay the bribe amount in installment.

Simultaneously, he lodged a complaint with Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), whose officials laid a trap and apprehended Jahdav while accepting Rs 5,000 bribe amount.

Shah said Jadhav was already convicted by this honourable court on April 17 this year in another case for accepting the bribe of Rs 25,000 from one Ruksana Banu. In that case also, he was sentenced to seven years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000, he added.
