NEW DELHI: A Delhi court remanded suspended BJP MP Babubhai Katara to ten days police custody.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Babubhai Katara was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly misusing the passports of his wife and son to smuggle out a woman and her son to Canada.

The case has also been handed over to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, who will seek custody of the accused before the Patlia House court, the officials added.

Katara, who represents Dahod in Gujarat's Panchmahal district, was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport along with Paramjir Kaut and Amarjit, a boy, while trying to board Air India flight AI-187 bound for Canada.

The police said Paramjeet Kaur was posing as Katara's wife Sharadaben while Amarjeet was impersonating Rajesh, the MP's son.

They were later charged under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code for impersonation, forging documents and cheating. Investigations are on to ascertain if money changed hands of if human trafficking was involved.

Katara's counsel Ajit Chopra objected to Delhi Police seeking his 10 days remand contending that his role was minimal in the case.

The counsel submitted that his alleged secretary Rajender used to arrange his travel.

After this court wanted to know from Katara as to how many times he had been to abroad to which the tribal MP replied that he has visited twice.

However, Delhi Police said Katara's ten days custodial interrogation was needed as he has to be taken to several places in Punjab to unearth his alleged involvement in the human trafficking racket.

The police disclosed that it has recovered three other passport of his other family members from his possession.

The investigating officer informed the court that the arrested MP had earlier also taken other person on his wife's diplomatic passport to a foreign country.
