KOLKATA: Alleging there were lapses in the security of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherejee, the Congress today demanded an inquiry to find out how a truck had hit his car at Nakashipara in Nadia district on Saturday night.

"Mukherjee is the external affairs minister and a very important political figure who gets 'Z'-category security.

He gets high security abroad but in his own state, there was no proper security arrangement for him. We demand an inquiry into the security lapses," state Congress working President Pradip Bhattacharya said.

Expressing surprise at how a truck could hit his vehicle, he said the accident could have been fatal had Mukherjee not been travelling in a bulletproof car.

Mukherjee was seriously injured when the truck hit his car at Nakashipara when he was returning to Kolkata from Murshidabad district.

He was today flown from here to New Delhi by a special aircraft after being airlifted to Kolkata from Krishnagar by a military helicopter.
