CHANDIGARH: All of Amarinder Singh’s men are on the run. Even as the former Punjab chief minister was granted transit bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court in connection with a cheating case on Thursday, former DGP SS Virk, who was the state police chief during his rule, was put under suspension by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The Vigilance Bureau registered the case of cheating and fraud against the Delhi-based Today Homes and Infrastructures for allegedly causing loss to the state exchequer to the tune of Rs 2,100 crore. Amarinder and his former cabinet colleague Chaudhary Jagjit Singh are among the 17 persons accused in the case. Amarinder sought transit bail after a red corner notice was issued against him.

Badal said “there was incontrovertible and independent evidence not only of black money to the tune of Rs 2,100 crore changing hands in this deal but also of a major hawala racket being patronized by the then CM.”

The VB arrested two executives of the company and swooped on the residence of the former cabinet minister.

A probe, conducted by an IG, had also found discrepancies in the deal, but the government had then brushed the findings of the Vigilance Bureau under the carpet.

Holidaying in London Amarinder termed it as “blatant act of political vendetta”, and said it only smacked of spirit of vengeance with which the Akalis would like to run the
government.

Close on the heels of this case, former Punjab DGP SS Virk, who was made to quit his office at the behest of the Election Commission, sought to take anticipatory bail in a land grabbing case.

A Ropar court, while declining him anticipatory bail on Saturday, however, asked the police to give him two days’ notice before executing his arrest.
