CHANDIGARH: Close on the heels of BIS Chahal, media adviser to the former Punjab chief minister, leaving the country surreptitiously, Amarinder Singh on Sunday took a flight to London sparking speculations about his escape from the inquiries against the alleged administrative and financial irregularities committed during his reign.
Amarinder’s sudden departure to London comes at a time when the Punjab Assembly session has begun.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal said on Monday that the former chief minister’s unscheduled departure to the UK only testified to the “guilty conscience of the scion of the Patiala royal family”.
The chief minister, however, clarified that his government would not indulge in witch-hunting but at the same time he would allow the law to take its course. The propriety demanded that Amarinder should have informed the Vidhan Sabha Speaker about his foreign visit, Badal said.
Amarinder scoffed at reports that he was trying to evade inquiries ordered by the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government. He said he had informed Sonia Gandhi and the leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal about his visit, which, he claimed, was for medical reasons.
Commenting on the length of his stay in London, Amarinder said it was up to the doctors to decide.
Meanwhile, the Vigilance Bureau has started assessing properties of BIS Chahal and is interrogating an assistant sub-inspector of police who used to escort the former media adviser.
Chahal escaped to the UK along with his family members soon after the formation of the new SAD-BJP government in the state. A former public relations officer, Chahal during the Congress rule, enjoyed overriding powers and was counted as Amarinder’s Man Friday.
