Justice met the “Almighty” at Bombay High Court on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Dharmendra Mishra had looked like a common litigant when he walked into a courtroom, clad in a red checked shirt and beige trousers. But everyone present was stunned when he told the judges in impeccable Hindi that he was the Almighty himself. Claiming that he should be given the powers and rights of the President of India, Mishra urged that a representation be made by the Indian government to the United Nations (UN), asking the latter to accept his will as the ultimate.

Justice JN Patel and Justice SC Dharmadhikari told Mishra that his demands were beyond the purview of the court, and dismissed his application. Mishra said that he was the reincarnations of Ram, Vishnu, Jesus Christ, Gautam Buddha and Alexander the Great - all rolled into one. He claimed that like him, his family members, too, had supernatural powers. His wife, Sarita, was “a reincarnation of Goddess Laxmi” and “foresaw the 11/7 train blasts”. His father, a resident of Allahabad, was “a reincarnation of Lord Shiva”. He added that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had taken rebirth as his son, also named Rajiv.

He told the court that he had written letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and President APJ Abdul Kalam but they went unheeded. It led Justice Patel to remark that they (PM, Sonia and President) were not obliged to believe in his claims, and nor could the court help him in any way in this regard.

Mishra, a Kurla resident working in a call centre, said, “I am reborn as a common man to see if God’s voice is heard when he is one of us.” About his wife not alerting the police after she foresaw the 11/7 blasts, Mishra said, “People have to die one day. Those who died that day were destined to die that way.” He was escorted to the main gate of the court by a bodyguard of one of the judges.
