NEW DELHI: The RSS has blown the whistle in the tussle between BJP chief Rajnath Singh and party general secretary Arun Jaitley.

The Sangh’s mouthpiece, Organiser, in its latest issue, has called BJP’s spectacular victory in Punjab as “Arunodaya” (Arun Jaitley’s rising). The It has tried to balance it with another title “Win for Team Rajnath.” Ironically, the RSS has long held that it is the ideology and not the individual who should be glorified.

The Organiser’s cover piece, written by R Balashankar, has significant connotations for the BJP’s in-house politics as it comes in the wake of party chief Rajnath Singh’s attempts to clip Jaitley’s wings in the recent organisational reshuffle. Though Jaitley has been made secretary of the party’s highest decision making body, the Parliamentary Board, he is no longer consulted by the party president on any issue of significance.

Commenting on the election results, the RSS’s mouthpiece says “the most outstanding performance was by Arun Jaitley in Punjab. His suave, articulate and dynamic presence electrified the party cadre. It is for the first time in BJP history that the party has emerged as a formidable third force in the state. The party has proved the first choice of the urban Hindu voter. The credit in Punjab for this phenomenon goes richly to Arun Jaitley”.

It has a piece of advice for Jaitley’s alternative as BJP’s legal brain in the form of Ravi Shankar Prasad. “The atmosphere was ripe for a landslide victory in Uttarakhand. The BJP had put in great efforts. And the central observer Ravi Shankar Prasad did an excellent job of organising and overseeing the campaign.”

The weekly then does a balancing act by saying, “The stars of the show, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad attributed the victory to teamwork, cadre enthusiasm and focused campaign on the party’s ideology. Inflation and anti-incumbency played their role. But it went beyond that.”

The RSS says despite these victories, the overall political picture for the BJP is not all that rosy. “The BJP has a long way to go and cannot afford to show itself as a platform of power hungry politicians,” it says.
