VANCOUVER: Highly skilled migrants in Canada, including Indians, are found to be unhappily stuck in the low-income bracket. To address this, the federal government is thinking of creating a national agency to assess and recognise foreign credentials.

For years in Canada, education has been one of the important parameters for accepting immigrants, resulting in highly educated new Canadians working in jobs that are not their chosen fields.

“It is something we need to fix,” said Jason Kenney, secretary of state for multiculturalism and Canadian identity. “There is a disconnect between our immigration policies and our labour market policies.”

With immigration continuing to rise each year, the problem is all set to get worse, according to the Toronto Sun newspaper. Given its future reliance on immigrants, it is high time Canada committed itself to fixing the problem and making the life of the highly educated immigrants better, said the report.
