DUBAI: An Indian woman escaped from the clutches of her captors who had planned to push her into prostitution after being brought to work as a housemaid.

The 31-year-old woman, who came from Kerala to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last week, is now in a shelter run by the Indian Community Welfare Committee. She escaped on Tuesday while she was being taken by her captors to a flat located in Dubai, the Gulf News said on Wednesday.

BS Mubarak, Labour Consul at the Indian Consulate, said the woman will be given refuge at the shelter run by the Indian Community Welfare Committee.

"We have taken down all the details from her and forward it to the authorities concerned here," said Mubarak.

Chased by her captors, the woman took refuge in a furniture shop and the woman was later handed over to the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

The woman told the daily that an agent had come to pick her from the Sharjah airport and was later told that she would be entertaining men.

"From that minute onwards I had been planning my escape," the woman said.
