MUMBAI: President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has not maintained the sanctity of the Chair by delaying a decision on Parliament attack accused Mohammed Afzal Guru, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said here on Saturday.

Thackeray was addressing a press conference at the Sena Bhavan at Dadar, to celebrate the victory of the party alliance in the Mumbai civic elections on Friday.

The Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence on Afzal, but an appeal for reprieve was made to the President.

“All parties unanimously selected Kalam as President, as he is a great scientist. I have been told he made the atom bomb. However, he has not maintained the sanctity of the Chair of the President,” Thackeray said.

The SC gave the death sentence to Afzal in October 2006. However, Thackeray said, since then the letter for taking a final decision was lying on the President’s table. “Have you ever heard of the head of state delaying a decision like this?” Thackeray said.
