WIJK AAN ZEE (The Netherlands): Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Magnus Carlsen of Norway in Group A to be joint third while Parimarjan Negi was upset by IM Nadezhda Kosintseva of Russia in the fourth round of the Corus International Chess tournament here.

For Anand, who scored his lone victory so far in the second round of the event against Alexander Motylev of Russia, it turned out to be a comfortable draw with black.

Carlsen, looking desperate to put an end to his losses in the super tournament, did little and after 20 moves the peace was signed.

Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan maintained his sole lead over top seed Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria after the former demolished Sergei Tiviakov of Holland in a long game.

Topalov also registered a fine victory in this round accounting for Alexei Shirov of Spain and these two, in fact, were the only two decisive games in the fourth round.

As things stand, Radjabov with his third victory in four games took his tally to 3.5 points while Topalov remained on his toes a half point adrift.

Anand, Peter Svidler and World champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, David Navara of Czech Republic and Levon Aronian of Armenia stand joint third at this time on 2.5 points each while former World champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine is next in line on 2 points.

Negi slipped from his shared first position after a shocking loss against International Master Kosintseva.

However, IM Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia maintained his stronghold on the event defeating local hopeful Manuel Bosboom and shot into sole lead on 3.5 points.

The Russian has a full point lead over Negi, Bosboom, top seed Michael Krasenkow of Poland and Chinese girl wonder Yifan Hou.

Playing the black side of a Sicilian Nazdorf, Anand faced a variation he himself adopted against Hungarian Peter Leko in the previous edition here and naturally the Indian had much better ideas than his young opponent. Carlsen just exchanged a couple of pieces before signing peace.

Negi was outdone by Kosintseva in a French defense game where the Indian played white. Going for the topical Winawer variation Negi seized the early initiative but a timely counterplay by Kosintseva had him under pressure.

The Delhi-based lost an exchange in a tactical melee and never recovered.

Today is the first of the three rest days in the event and the fifth round will now be played on Thursday.
