NEW DELHI: The second half of the 2006-07 season of the newly-set up Professional Golf Tour of India will be the richest ever in the country with more than Rs.23 million up for grabs.
“We are proud of what we have been able to achieve this year as it is PGTI’s first season. This is just the beginning and it proves that the future for a Indian golf tour is very bright,” said ace golfer Jyoti Randhawa, one of the PGTI board of directors on Tuesday. The first half of the season was worth Rs.14 million. The second half of the season will kick-off with the IOC Extra Premium Masters in eastern Assam’s oil town of Digboi from Jan 31-Feb 3 and will offer a purse of Rs.2 million, PGTI said.
It will be followed by the Solaris Open, which will be played at the Bangalore Golf Club from Feb 22-25 and will have Rs.6 million on offer. It will be contested by some of the leading players of the country as well as Asian Tour regulars like Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing, who is currently placed fifth on the PGTI Order of Merit, and Myanmar’s Zaw Moe. The top 20 professionals of the country will be seen in action at the Business-Today Pro-Am, which is scheduled for March 2-3.
A regular event on the Indian calendar, the SRF Match-Play will be played for a total purse of Rs.2 million this year from March 14-18. The venue is yet to be announced. Also scheduled is the AIS Open, which will have a prize purse of Rs.6 million and the Rs.7 million Crompton Greaves, will be held at the Bombay Presidency Golf Course from April 26-29. With more tournaments still to be finalised, the total prize money in the second half of the calendar will further go up.
