MUMBAI: Following their lacklustre showing in the Champions Trophy and a 0-4 thrashing at the hands of South Africa in the one-day series, India are not in the pink of health when it comes to one-day cricket. The World Cup is looming around the corner and chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar knows how important it is to go into a big tournament with high confidence.

“We want to win each and every game before going to the World Cup,” Vengsarkar said on the sidelines of launching the Baskin Robbins seven-a-side tournament here. India are scheduled to play four games each, four against the West Indies and an equal number against Sri Lanka in the run-up to the World Cup.

“It is important that we pick the best combination and a team that will win,” the chairman of selectors said. However, Vengsarkar indicated the inclusion of new faces in the 15-man squad that will play the first two one-dayers against West Indies in the light of some of the well-established players going through a bad patch.

“Those who have done well in first class cricket will definitely be given a chance. There is no question about it. I have always said that form and fitness is important,” he said.

At the same time, Vengsarkar said that the door was not closed on anyone, including Irfan Pathan who left the South Africa tour during the third and final Test to get back into rhythm by bowling in first class games. “Irfan had a poor one-day series. He was asked if he wants to go back. He agreed for that. But it is been portrayed that we have sent him back. He has to bowl more and more overs. Irfan has lost his form. He  can always get his form back and get his place back,” Vengsarkar said.
