MUMBAI: Gangster Abu Salem’s lawyer Ashok Sarogi has floated a political outfit called the Rashtravadi Samajwadi Party, which will contest the BMC elections next year.

The deported gangster will not contest the civic elections, but he may file his nomination from Mubarakpur for the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, also early next year.

“We plan to field eight to 10 candidates [for the BMC],” Sarogi, who has named himself general secretary, said. “The list has not been decided.” Sarogi may contest from Malad.

According to Sarogi, the party was recently registered with the Election Commission. Its symbol will be a motorcycle and it will have a yellow-and-green flag.

“We are concentrating on Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh,” party chief Satyendra Singh Yadav said. “Our first aim is the BMC elections. Then we will go full swing for UP.”

Yadav said Salem was not made an office-bearer because the party does not want to get into any legal trouble. “But Abu Salem is our godfather,” Sarogi said. Sarogi is also producing a movie on Salem’s life. Salem is lodged in the Arthur Road Jail and is awaiting trial in the 1993 bomb blasts case.
