Musharraf grants parole to jailed leader

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani opposition leader Javed Hashmi, who is serving a 23-year prison term after being convicted of inciting mutiny in the army, has been granted three-day parole to attend his daughter's wedding.

Hashmi is the chairman of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy and a close aide of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

He was granted the three-day parole to attend his daughter's wedding, state-run PTV said.

Hashmi was sentenced to 23 years in jail in April, 2004 for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery and defamation after he circulated a letter purportedly written by some military officers criticising the policies of President Pervez Musharraf.
