KATHMANDU: Maoists have withdrawn their call for a two-day nationwide strike even as the Nepal Government refused to revoke its decision to appoint ambassadors to 14 countries, including India.

The Maoists had threatened to launch nationwide protests on December 31 and January 1 if the Seven Party Alliance Government did not revoke its decisions, including that of nominating ambassadors, expansion of police posts and transfer of civil servants.

"As the government has assured us that it will consult us in all political appointments, we decided to withdraw the general strike," a Maoist talks team member Dev Gurung said.

He said the government had assured them that it won't restore empty police posts and won't make any new political appointments before the rebels join the interim government.

The government will not withdraw its decision to nominate ambassadors to different countries and officials to the National Human Rights Commission, a central member of Nepali Congress said quoting Koirala.

Koirala also said that he had consulted with Maoist chief Prachanda prior to making the appointments and said that some seats were reserved for the Maoists in the NHRC and diplomatic posts.

The Kathmandu Post reported that Koirala has reserved the post of ambassador to France for the Maoists to which Prachanda had agreed.

The daily quoted Koirala telling a human rights delegation that when the rebels were hindering village development committees and obstructing the delivery of containers from India to the cantonment sites for arms storage, how could they expect to join the government.
