52 countries, 30 heads of state, 20 ministers and more than 300 delegates will be present in Delhi to mark 100 years of the Satyagraha movement. Nobel laureates — Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mohammad Yunus — and other distinguished guests like Ahmed Kathrada, the South African freedom fighter and Peruvian economist, Hernando De Soto, will be witness to a global conference in the Capital to be held between January 20 and 30 next year. The event will emphasise and reiterate the importance of the Gandhian principles across the world.

Presentations on conflict resolution, Gandhian philosophy for poverty eradication, education and people's empowerment, dialogue amongst people and culture, and topics on a nuclear-free and non-violent world order will be covered during the two-day conference organised by the Indian National Congress.

The preparations have already begun with external affairs minister for state, Anand Sharma, taking the lead and assigning country portfolios to MPs, who will look after the visiting dignitaries.

“The conference is going to be huge and soul-inspiring. We are taking no chances. We have been asked to take meticulous care of the visiting dignitaries and personally look after them during their stay,”a Lok Sabha MP told DNA, on condition on anonymity.

The conference will also feature an exhibition delineating different milestones of the Satyagraha movement and a dance performance by Bharatnatyam dancer Mallika Sarabhai. She will present a ballet on the concept of the Satyagraha movement.

In fact, special itineraries have been prepared for guests, who wish to visit Porbander and Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat.

"We will take them on tours and acquaint them with the life of Mahatama Gandhi. Many dignitaries have already shown interest and we are making necessary arrangements," the Congress MP added.   Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Congress president Sonia Gandhi will attend the conference.
