NAGPUR: The results of the Daryapur and Chimur assembly by-elections in Vidarbha have added another feather to Revenue Minister Narayan Rane’s cap. The Congress has bagged both seats, defeating the Shiv Sena and BJP, respectively.

Prakash Bharsakhle (Daryapur) and Vijay Wadettiwar (Chimur), who retained their seats, had followed Rane’s lead and quit the Sena to join the Congress.

The outcome has diminished the Sena’s strength in the assembly. But it is also embarrassing for state BJP president Nitin Gadkari, who almost broke his party’s 22-year-old alliance with the Sena over Chimur.

Gadkari said his party would do some introspection. A jubilant Rane described the win as a victory for Congress president Sonia Gandhi. “December 9 is Soniaji’s birthday and this is my gift to her,” he said.

Rane said many more Sena legislators are willing to leave the party to join him and the Congress. Sources put the number of these MLAs at 13 and say they will be quitting the Sena in phases.
