KOLKATA: Middle order batsman Bhavin Thakkar hit 157 runs, but it was not enough as Mumbai were bowled out for 372, well short of Bengal’s first innings score of 578.

Bengal inspired by right-arm fast bowler Ranadeb Bose, who took 5 for 69, bagged tow points by virtue of their first innings lead at the Eden Gardens. Mumbai were asked to follow-on and finished at 23 for no loss.

Resuming from their overnight score of 206 for two, Mumbai lost their last eight wickets for 166 runs.

Bose removed skipper Amol Muzumdar for 36 to begin the collapse.

Shortly Bose also removed Thakkar. The fast bowler then had little trouble in finishing off the Mumbai tail.

Former India all-rounder Ramesh Powar played patiently for his 29, but he could do little to prevent the slide as off-spinner Saurasish Lahiri got the better of him. Mumbai now play Punjab in Mohali.

Venu hits ton

A superb unbeaten 105 by captain Y Venugopal Rao helped Andhra hold former champions Tamil Nadu to a draw in their Elite Group-A match in Chennai on Monday.

Tamil Nadu, with a 319-run first innings lead, forced Andhra to follow on after they were bundled out for 155 in the first innings but managed 327 for 8 in 120.5 overs in their second innings to draw the match, which was called off while the 13th of the 20 mandatory overs was in progress. The hosts collected two points for the first innings lead, while Andhra have four points in their two group matches so far. Resuming at 79 for one, overnight batsmen LN Prasad Reddy (34, 1x4) and ASK Varma (21, 3x4) were back in the pavilion leaving their side tottering at 109 for 3. However, Venugopal Rao stuck to his ground though two more wickets fell - Y Ganeswar Rao (7) and AG Pradeep (4) - and then built his side’s rescue act in the company of RVCH Prasad.

Delhi gain two points

The match between Delhi and defending champions Uttar Pradesh ended in a drab draw after no play was possible due to bad weather on the final day. But it was Delhi who claimed two crucial points by virtue of a 12-run first innings lead from this second round clash played on a docile Feroze Shah Kotla track. Bad light and smoggy factor denied the possibility of play on the final day, which was just limited to academic interest as Delhi seemed happy with their first innings returns and did not look like forcing an outright win. The only point of interest was whether Delhi opener Aakash Chopra, who was unbeaten on 68 overnight, would complete his century and make a double, having made 150 in the first essay. But with the conditions showing no signs of improving, apart from a brief period in between, the match was officially called off at 12.30 pm.

Punjab, Gujarat draw

Punjab settled for a draw with Gujarat after bad light stopped the play early on the fourth and final day at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali. Resuming at the overnight 86 for one, Gujarat lost Timil Patel after he added 39 runs in the 11.3 overs and were 125 for two when umpires called off the play early due to bad light and light drizzle.Modi and Kirat Damani (13 not out) had added 28 runs for the third wicket when the stumps were drawn. Punjab had got a first innings lead of 295 by scoring 503 for nine declared in reply to the first innings total of 208 all out of Gujarat.

Ojha takes seven

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed a brilliant seven wicket haul to help Hyderabad gain a first innings lead of 32 runs and earn two points against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Ojha (7 for 114) spun out the lower-middle order and cleared the tail as the hosts folded up for 353 in reply to Hyderabad’s first innings score of 385. Hyderabad then piled up 279 for 4 in their second innings with AT Rayudu (110) and Ojha (1) at crease when play was called off. Rajasthan, resuming at their overnight score of 347 for 8, needed 38 runs to level the scores but the tailenders fell to the guiles of Ojha.
