MUMBAI: Committees appointed by the University of Mumbai have pointed out the lack of basic infrastructure like laboratories and libraries in private unaided engineering colleges affiliated to it.

The local inquiry committees had been appointed to visit 42 colleges and decide whether their affiliations with the University of Mumbai should be continued. The report reveals the poor state of well-known colleges like Rizvi College and KJ Somaiya College of Engineering going by AICTE standards.

The lacunae in facilities like computers, labs, toilets, teaching and non-teaching staff become more glaring viewed in the light of the hefty fees charged by these private unaided engineering colleges.

In fact, the committees have also pointed out that in a number of cases, the fees remain unutilised.

KY Rajput, member of a local inquiry committee, said: “While scrutinising these colleges, we found some trying to produce false accounts. Thus we felt the need for more time to conduct the investigations. We also observed that many colleges lacked adequate  teaching staff.”

Each year the university appoints 12 committees comprising three senior teachers, members of the university’s academic council and the board of studies to prepare extensive reports.
