SRINAGAR: A “love affair” with a Muslim girl proved fatal for local BJP leader Ramesh Kumar who was allegedly strangled to death by the girl’s brother in Kashtiwar area of Jammu region.

Ramesh Kumar, BJP Mandal (block) president and a former SPO (Special Police Official), went missing on the night of November 28 while returning home at Kewa village in Bonzwa block in Kashtiwar area. Police recovered his body from a nearby nullah (stream) the next day.

S P Vaid, Inspector General of police, Jammu range, said Kumar was reportedly having an affair with a local Muslim girl which was possibly not liked by her brother Mohammad Ramzan.

“This is possibly the motive of the murder. Ramzan, perhaps, didn’t like his sister’s relationship with someone not from the same religion. And that led to the murder. This has nothing to do with militancy,” he said. Ramzan is absconding and efforts are on to track him down, Vaid said. “We have held one of his family members for interrogation,” he added.

Monohar Singh, senior superintendent of police, Doda, said the police is looking into different angles of the crime and have got some leads in the case.

“The body didn’t have any torture marks. The jugular vain was pressed and that probably caused his death. There were injury marks on the right side of his head. The body has been sent for post-mortem. We are waiting for the reports”, he said.

What has added a new twist to the story are the claims made by the BJP that Kumar was killed by militants because of his association with security agencies in combating militancy.

“There is no truth in the claims that he was killed because of his affair with a Muslim girl. He was our Mandal president and helped security forces in combating militancy. He had no security. And militants have precisely taken the advantage. We demand a compensation of rupees five lakh for Kumar’s family and employment for his kin,” said Ashok Khajuria, J&K state BJP president.
