MUMBAI: Dalit organisations will go ahead with the December 4 rally in Nagpur to protest against atrocities against their community, despite an appeal by Maharashtra government at an all-party meeting here on Saturday to put off the agitation.

The appeal to postpone the protest was made by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at a meeting to review the situation in Maharasthra in the aftermath of widespread violence in the State on Wednesday and Thursday, triggered by the desecration of a statue of Dalit icon Dr BR Ambekdar in Kanpur on Tuesday.

Besides turning down the chief minister's appeal, RPI (Kawade) leader Jogendra Kawade demanded the resignation of State Home Minister RR Patil, stating that dalits will get justice only after his removal.

Kawade was nominated to the Maharashtra Legislative Council by the Natinonalist Congress Party, to which Patil, also Deputy Chief Minister, belongs.

Dalit organisations, including most RPI factions, have been agitating across the State since September when four members of a Dalit family were killed by a mob in Khairlanji village of Bhandara district in Vidhraba region.
