Mumbai is able to take only two wickets as the hosts reach 226 on day one of their Ranji tie at the Eden Gardens

KOLKATA: Bengal seized the initiative on the opening day of the Ranji trophy tournament against Mumbai, reaching 226 for two at stumps, albeit at a snail’s pace. Bengal won the toss and elected to bat. And the decision proved a good one as they batted for the whole day with only two successes for the day for the visitors.

At stumps, A Jhunjhunwala was unbeaten on 87 with 14 hits to the fence and giving him company was Manoj Tewari on nine. After Bengal lost Arindam Das (26) at the score 71, A Chakraborty and Jhunjhunwala engaged in a fruitful 130-run second wicket partnership. During this period Chakraborty scored a gritty 81 with seven boundaries before he was taken by Kulkarni. Jhunjhunwala batted well throughout and looked set for another Ranji ton.

For Mumbai, Kulkarni was the meanest customer giving away 31 runs of his 26 overs and taking one wicket. The others bowled well in parts.

Anirudh, Rayadu hit half centuries

JAIPUR: Solid half centuries by skipper Anirudh Singh and A T Rayadu helped Hyderabad reach 246 for 5 against Rajasthan on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League cricket match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Friday. Anirudh smashed 87 and Rayadu hit 62 on a docile wicket after Hyderabad won the toss and chose to bat. The duo also put on a healthy parnership of 110 runs. D Vinay Kumar (8) and I Khaleel (1) were at the crease when bails were taken off.

With medium pacers not proving effective as T S Suman and D Teja put on 37 runs for the opening wicket, Rajasthan skipper Ajay Jadeja brought on his spinners and veteran Mohammad Aslam drew first blood in form of Teja. Rayadu, being more aggressive, reached his fifty in 67 balls hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes but Anirudh appeared patient to reach his fifty in 138 balls. Anirudh, who hit 10 fours and one six, fell to Rahul Kanwat in the 89th over of the day.

TN rack up 260 for 4

CHENNAI: Opener M Vijay cracked a superb unbeaten 97 (266 b, 9x4, 1x6) as Tamil Nadu made 260 for four at close on the opening day of their four-day Super League Group-A Ranji Trophy cricket match against Andhra on Friday. Vijay put on 146 runs for the second wicket with captain S Badrinath to help the hosts recover from the early loss of S Vidyuth after being put into bat. Vidyuth was caught by Kalyanakrishna off his own bowling for 13.

Vijay and Badrinath then resisted the Andhra attack of medium pace at one end and spin at the other end. Badrinath was caught by wicket-keeper M S K Prasad when he snicked an outgoing delivery of medium pacer R V C H Prasad. Badrinath’s 69 contained two huge sixes and five boundaries. Vijay was then joined by Test discard Hemang Badani. The two put on 46 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Gujarat restricted

MOHALI: Love Ablish picked a five-wicket haul as Punjab dismissed Gujarat for 208 in their first innings on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group B cricket match at the Punjab Cricket Stadium on Friday. Ablish returned 5 for 40 after Punjab elected to field. In reply, Punjab were 25 for no loss with openers Ravneet Rickey batting on 11 and Karan Goel on nine at close in their first innings.

Earlier, Bhavik Thakar top scored for Gujarat with an 85-run knock, aided by 13 hits to the fence, but the visitors struggled as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Akash Christian (5) was the first to go after he was caught by Gaurav at the second slip off a delivery of Ablish when the board read 12. Four other batsmen Parthiv Patel (5) and Kirat Damani (8) failed miserably while Ashraf Makda and Ishan Malhotra were out for ducks.

Chopra gives selectors a timely reminder

NEW DELHI: Ignored for the Test series against South Africa, former Team India opener Aakash Chopra sent a strong message with an unbeaten 128 as hosts Delhi ended day one of their Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh on 257 for six on Friday. Opting to bat first, Delhi received an early jolt when Shalabh Srivastav removed opener Shikhar Dhawan (6) but Chopra and Mayank Tehlan (25) put on 61 runs to steady the innings.

Praveen Kumar broke the partnership by trapping Tehlan and after another eight runs were added to Delhi’s total, the lanky pacer struck again by castling host captain Manhas. Delhi found itself in morass at 79 for three. Viraat Kohli (42) then joined Chopra to stem the rot and put on 84 runs for the fourth wicket as the hosts cruised to 143 when Rohit Srivastav’s direct throw from square leg caught Viraat short of ground. Chopra’s patient and cultured, unbeaten knock of 128 came off 269 balls and had 14 hits to the fence.
