MUMBAI: Jyoti Randhawa is back in business.

A day after finishing a credible ninth at the HSBC Champions golf tournament in Shanghai, the 34-year-old golfer has moved on to prepare for his next event — the UBS Hong Kong Open — that tees off on Thursday.

A tad disappointed at letting slip his advantage, the Indian is nevertheless satisfied with the final result. The ninth-place finish helped move him into the top 100 — No. 89 — in the latest world golf rankings. “It was a great experience. Now I believe I’ve arrived at a stage where I can play against the best in the world. I was playing against Tiger Woods for the first time and was leading after the first two days,” Randhawa told DNA from Hong Kong on Monday.

Randhawa led a high-calibre field at the Sheshan International Golf Club — that included Woods, multiple major winner Retief Goosen of South Africa and former US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand amongst others — after the first two rounds. Even after the third round the Indian had a chance of finishing among the top three at the $5 million event. So what went wrong?

“I think I handled myself quite well and was not as nervous as I thought I’d be. Having said that I feel I made a few mistakes and lost my concentration at times,” he said. “I should have continued playing my game when I was leading and not thought about what will happen in the following rounds.” Randhawa, who had won two tournaments before Shanghai — including the Hero Honda Indian Open last month — believes he has become a  better player this year. “I’ve particularly learnt more about the mental aspect — to control your mind while playing the game.”

He now has his sights set on greener pastures. “I’m already playing on the European Tour. My immediate goal is to win an event there. Then I’ll try to play on the US Tour.”
